chickenpox also called varicella, contagious viral disease that affects mainly children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4 million people develop chickenpox each year, and more than 95 percent of Americans will have had chickenpox by the time they reach adulthood.
CAUSE
· Chickenpox is caused by varicella-zoster virus, a type of herpes virus.
· The virus spreads through the air via infected droplets emitted from the nose or mouth while coughing or sneezing. Touching the fluid from a chickenpox blister can also spread the disease.
· Chickenpox is contagious for approximately seven days during a person’s period of infection. Contagiousness begins about two days before symptoms appear and continues until all blisters have formed scabs.
SIGN & SYMPTOMS
- · Fever
- · Loss of appetite
- · Developing red or pink bumps all over your body
- · Bumps filled with fluid that leak
- · Bumps that scab over and begin to heal
- · Headache
- · Rash
- · General feeling of sickness, or malaise.
LOCATION
The rash, which usually covers the face, scalp, and trunk of the body, starts as red bumps but quickly develops into small blisters. The rash and the blisters are extremely itchy. As the disease progresses, the blisters break open and form scabs, which fall off after about one to two weeks.
INCUBATION TIME
The incubation period—the time between initial infection and the first appearance of symptoms—is approximately two weeks.
USEFUL TIPS & DIET MANAGEMENT FOR CHICKEN POX
- · Chicken pox is a highly contagious infection and can easily spread through direct contact or airborne transmission of water droplets by sneezing or coughing. So it is best that you do not go out when you have chicken pox as you may transmit the virus to others.
- · Avoid direct contact with other people.
- · The clothes of the infected person should be soaked in boiling water before washing so as to kill the virus. Crusts should also be burnt.
- · Do not scratch the blisters or crusts as it may result in other complications such as bacterial infections.
- · Use a nose mask while taking care of the patient and wash your hands
- DIET MANAGEMENT FOR CHICKEN POX
- · You must include fresh vegetables and fruits in your daily dietary plan.
- · Drink a lot of fluid and fruit juices.
- · Lemon juice and the juices of other citrus fruits can be consumed three to four times a day. Vitamin C in these fruits is very beneficial for providing relief from the symptoms of chicken pox such as fever and itching.
- · Drink a soup made of fresh carrots and coriander leaves at least three to four times a day. This greatly helps in recovering from the fatigue and weakness caused by chicken pox virus.
- · Drink an herbal tea made from cinnamon or chamomile two to three times a day. This will help bring down the fever and provide relief to the sore throat.
- · Chicken pox foods to avoid include fried and oily foods. Junk food should be strictly avoided
- · Meat, and other foods that are high in saturated fat, such as full-fat dairy products, should be avoided when you have the chicken pox. These foods that are high in saturated fat can promote inflammation, making the rash worse and slowing healing.
- · You may love to eat frozen products, such as ice cream and milkshakes, while you have the chickenpox -- they are easy to consume. If you do eat ice cream, choose low-fat frozen yogurt or low-fat ice cream, or ice pops as an alternative.
- · Spicy and salty foods can irritate sores in the mouth and throat and should be avoided when you have the chickenpox. This includes salty chicken broth, vegetable-blend juices or any type of soup that contains peppers or spicy seasoning.
